Common Troubleshooting
- LocalView will not open Close and relaunch the app from the Start menu or taskbar. If it still does not open, try restarting Windows and launching again. If the issue persists, uninstall and reinstall LocalView from the Microsoft Store.
- A file will not preview LocalView previews most common file types natively. If a file type is not supported, LocalView will show a placeholder. Check the supported file types list in Help.
- A video does not play LocalView uses the Windows media stack. Some formats (AVI, MKV, WMV) may require additional codecs. Installing the free HEVC Video Extensions or a codec pack can resolve playback for unsupported formats.
- AVI, MKV, or WMV opens in an external player This means Windows does not have a suitable codec installed for that format. LocalView will fall back to launching the file in your default system player when it cannot decode the format itself.
- PDF preview is not rendering correctly Scroll to a different page and back, or close and reopen the file. If the issue is consistent across multiple PDFs, please contact support with details about the PDF (file size, whether it is password-protected, etc.).
- My device cannot reach the TFTP server Make sure TFTP is started in LocalView before attempting to connect from the device. Check that your Windows Firewall is not blocking UDP port 69. The TFTP server and the target device must be on the same network segment or have proper routing. See Network Tool Notes below for more detail.
- SSH says "connection refused" The destination host must have an SSH server running and accepting connections on the configured port (default 22). Verify the host IP or hostname, port, and that the remote SSH service is active.
- PowerShell pane will not open Make sure PowerShell is installed on your system. Windows 10 and 11 include Windows PowerShell 5 by default. If you have removed it or are running a restricted environment, PowerShell may be blocked.
- "Open with LocalView" isn't in my Explorer right-click menu Windows integration is optional and off by default. Turn it on inside LocalView under Settings → Windows — you can add "Open with LocalView" / "Open folder in LocalView" to the File Explorer right-click menu (files, folders, and drives) and add LocalView to the "Open with" list per file type. It's per-user and reversible, and never forces LocalView as your default app. On Windows 11, custom entries appear under "Show more options" (or press Shift+F10) — that's how Windows 11 shows non-store apps. The entries attach to files, folders, and drives, not to "This PC" or the navigation tree.
- Reset LocalView settings LocalView stores settings locally on your device. You can reset to defaults from the Settings panel inside the app. This clears pinned folders, theme preferences, layout state, and other preferences — your files are not affected.
- Reinstall LocalView Uninstall LocalView from Windows Settings → Apps, then reinstall from the Microsoft Store. Your files are not stored in LocalView and will not be affected by reinstalling.
Network Tool Notes
TFTP Server
- TFTP is manual and temporary. You must start it from inside LocalView each time.
- TFTP does not start automatically when LocalView launches.
- TFTP does not run in the background after being stopped or after LocalView closes.
- Only the file or folder you selected is available during the session.
- Windows Firewall may block UDP port 69 by default. You may need to add a temporary inbound rule to allow TFTP traffic.
- The TFTP server and the target device must be on the same subnet or have routing configured between them.
SSH
- LocalView's SSH client requires that the destination device or computer has SSH enabled and accessible.
- "Connection refused" means either the host is unreachable, SSH is not running on the target, or the port is wrong.
- Verify the IP/hostname, port (default 22), and credentials before contacting support.
Serial Console
- Serial console requires the proper COM port to be available in Windows and the correct driver installed for your USB-to-serial adapter or built-in serial port.
- Verify the COM port number in Windows Device Manager before attempting a connection.
