What LocalView Is
LocalView is a Windows desktop application for browsing, previewing, and managing local files on your own computer. It is published by SureWhyNot, LLC.
LocalView is built around a local-first principle: your files stay on your machine. The app is designed to work on your local file system without requiring cloud connectivity for its core functionality.
What LocalView Does Not Do
LocalView does not:
- Collect or transmit personal information
- Upload your files to any server
- Scan your files or report file metadata to SureWhyNot, LLC or any third party
- Require you to create an account
- Include usage telemetry or analytics
- Track how you use the application
- Display advertisements
- Sell or share your data
- Sync your files or settings to the cloud
- Automatically send diagnostic data
- Run background services when the app is closed
What LocalView Stores Locally
LocalView stores the following information locally on your device only:
- App settings and preferences
- Theme selection
- Pinned folders
- Recent folder history
- UI layout preferences (panel sizes, split view state)
- Preview preferences
- Tour and onboarding completion state
- Quick Actions toolbar configuration
This information is stored on your device using standard Windows application data storage. It does not leave your machine unless you manually export, share, or send it. Uninstalling LocalView or resetting settings from within the app will clear this local data.
Network Features
LocalView includes optional network tools. These tools are designed for use by developers, system administrators, network engineers, and lab users. The following applies to all network features in LocalView:
- All network features are user-initiated. LocalView does not start network services automatically.
- TFTP server: LocalView includes a temporary TFTP server that you can start manually to serve a local file or folder to a network device. It operates only during the session in which you start it. It does not run in the background, does not start on app launch, and stops when you close the session or close the app. LocalView does not transmit your files anywhere automatically — the TFTP server only serves files in direct response to TFTP requests you initiate from a remote device.
- SSH client: The SSH feature connects to remote hosts that you specify. LocalView does not store or transmit SSH credentials to SureWhyNot, LLC.
- Telnet client: Same as SSH — connections are made to destinations you specify and are not logged or transmitted to SureWhyNot, LLC.
- Serial console: Serial connections are made to local COM ports you select. No data is transmitted to SureWhyNot, LLC.
LocalView does not automatically transmit files, session data, or connection details to SureWhyNot, LLC through any of these features.
Diagnostic Data
LocalView does not automatically send diagnostic data, crash reports, or usage information to SureWhyNot, LLC. If a future version of LocalView adds optional diagnostic reporting, it will be clearly disclosed, user-initiated, and opt-in only.
Third-Party Services — Microsoft Store
LocalView is distributed through the Microsoft Store. When you purchase, download, or install LocalView through the Microsoft Store, Microsoft may process account information, payment information, and installation data according to Microsoft's own privacy policies and terms of service. SureWhyNot, LLC does not control or have access to Microsoft Store transaction data.
For Microsoft Store-related privacy information, refer to the Microsoft Privacy Statement.
Children's Privacy
LocalView is a general-purpose file utility and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect any personal information from children. Because LocalView does not collect personal information from anyone, this is not a concern in normal use.
Changes to This Policy
If this privacy policy changes, the updated version will be posted at surewhynot.app/localview/privacy with a revised effective date. We will not reduce your privacy protections without clearly disclosing the change.
